Veracruz Spanish Memories Bilingual Reader Series:
Fun, Short Tales that Take You from Speaking Student Spanish to Truly Speaking Spanish

Book 1

Book Cover, Veracruz Spanish Memories Bilingual Reader Series, Book 1 It's fun. Most bilingual readers, although they are very good, aren't much fun to read. In my Veracruz Spanish Memories Series I've set out to change all that. The tales are short; the topics either warm your heart or bring a smile to your lips.

The Spanish is full and expressive. This isn't a book for beginners. It's great language development for intermediate and advanced students.

In our blog for our Spanish immersion school in Veracruz, Mexico, my husband wrote about little, human, usually happy, often touching things we'd see as we were out and about the city. These short writings (many with pictures) are the basis of my book. They were written in a delightful, respectful style.

The Spanish translations of these tales comes first. Each is written in Spanish that is equal in style to that of the English. You'll read Spanish the way a well-spoken native Spanish speaker would have written them.

You'll get to experience the difference between a "schoolish, textbookish" translation, which these are not, and a full and true to the intent and feeling handling that is encountered in the translation of literary novels.

To strengthen understanding and the educational value of the Spanish, there are lots of explanatory end notes.

You'll have lots of "Oh that's how they say that" moments. Seeing how things are really said in Spanish will go a long way toward taking you from speaking student Spanish to truly speaking Spanish.

Book 2

Book Cover, Veracruz Spanish Memories Bilingual Reader Series, Book 2 This is the second book in the series, and it’s as much fun to read as the first book. The series, Veracruz Spanish Memories Bilingual Reader Series, has grown out of my thirteen-year experience as owner and director of a Spanish immersion school far south in Mexico.

If I were looking at learning Spanish only academically, I’d have to say that there are many excellent bilingual readers. But I look at learning Spanish as a human process (with a strong academic component), and I say that yes, they are good, but they aren’t human enough, happy or touching or interesting or heartwarming enough.

This series takes blogs from our language school’s website, blogs written about little things that were fun, or sweet, or sometimes bittersweet that show the warmth and kindness and culture of the people of Veracruz.

I’ve prepared the blogs in true Spanish (not textbook Spanish). The humor and subtlety of the blogs is captured in the Spanish. The translations are not word for word, but instead are idea for idea. You get to see how to really say it in Spanish instead of just talking in English using Spanish words.

I’ve included lots of footnotes. You’ll find wonderful new vocabulary and new meaning for words you already know. I want everything to be as clear as can be. I want learning to be as easy as can be.

While you’re enjoying fun reading in Spanish and checking it against the English, you’ll begin seeing the fullness and expressiveness of the language. Almost immediately this fullness and expressiveness will start being part of your written and spoken Spanish.

Beginning Spanish:
A Self-Study Beginner's Course that Lets You Use Any Native Speaker as Your Private Tutor

This book lets you learn to speak Spanish without needing to attend school or pay for private classes.

Based on my years owning and running a Spanish immersion school in Veracruz, Mexico, I’ve developed a technique that lets any native speaker serve as your private tutor.

Self-study doesn’t help you with pronunciation and doesn’t allow you to carry on conversations, but using this approach, you get that help.

The native speaker needs no training. I’ve included all the instructions and explanations they need to do the material with you. I’ve included these in both English and Spanish so that

you, too, know exactly what’s going on.

As you work through the book, you can have a variety of native speakers help you. The book supplies the continuity of your lessons.

The lessons you’ll be working through are ones I prepared for my beginning students. In an immersion school, there is never enough time, and so none of my chapters contain filler materials found in textbooks; there’s nothing to slow you down.

But everything is there that you need to move forward as fast as you can. The book has lots and lots of practice. Immediately after the exercises are the answers. This makes the book easier to use. You don’t have to flip to the end of the chapter or to an appendix to find an answer section (it’s a format that makes this book very user-friendly on e-readers, tablets, and smartphones).

Spanish is a happy language, and learning it with a helper is pure fun.

Talking with Teresa Series:
Fun, Simple, Straightforward, Conversation Rich, Youthful Stories that Build your Fluency and Vocabulary

Book 1, Teresa and Lori Together

Getting started speaking a foreign language requires two things—some everyday vocabulary and facility with basic grammar.

This series of short books is designed to help greatly with both.

To carry on conversations, beginners and lower intermediates need all the tenses, but use them in very simple sentence structure. In terms of its simplicity and straightforwardness, the language learner’s conversation resembles that of young children.

It is to children’s conversation this book turns to help adults with starting and improving their speaking of the language they are studying.

Two young cousins, one American and one Mexican, are constantly engaged in lively conversation throughout the stories.

The situations are those of everyday life, and so the vocabulary the reader needs is constantly reinforced. Past, present, and future settings have the cousins and others speaking in all the tenses. For the reader it’s an ongoing review and development of conjugations.

Learning is easiest when the material is fun. These stories are charming. Using the series to improve speaking is a delight.

Enseñar español a tus amigos anglosajones

Libro 1, Teresa y Lori reunidas

about Linda Langner

These things are so often written in 3rd person, but let me write as myself.

My academic background is a Master's in math and a double major bachelor's in math and English. For years I've taught both.

A special love of mine is Spanish. I went back to school for the academic side of Spanish and traveled in Spanish-speaking countries for the human side.

We, my husband and I, enjoyed Latin America so much that for the past fourteen years we have lived in Veracruz, Mexico.

Until we retired a year ago, we owned and operated a language immersion school. People came from 34 different countries to study Spanish with us.

Spanish replaced math and English as the subject I was teaching. Our language school's approach to teaching included very small class size and highly interactive instruction.

There was nearly no material available for teaching Spanish this way. We developed almost all of our teaching materials.

Teaching group size of two gave me lots of individualized experience with Spanish learners and an understanding of what came easy and what was difficult.

There are, of course, general patterns when it comes to what's easy for students and what isn't. Being aware of the general patterns is very important, but even more important is understanding that every learner is different.

The challenge was to prepare teaching materials that included all the right explanation and practice for everyone without being inclusive to the point of bogging down.

The books I've written and am writing are very different (and very much better) than they would have been if we had not had our language immersion school.

We loved every day of the school, and I'm so happy to have had the opportunity to gain the skills that came from my thirteen years of experience teaching in it.

We live in Veracruz and hope to be here forever. Living in Veracruz for us is living in Paradise. Our home is the spacious, old and traditional house that served as part of the school's facilities.

We're only half a block from the Gulf of Mexico, an easy walk to el Centro (the old city center), and an even easier walk to the seawalls and the entrance to Veracruz's large port.

I'm married and have two adult children. My favorite thing to do is to play Beethoven (and other greats) on our piano. My second favorite thing to do is to be out around Paradise.
